Once, in a desperate attempt to win back the girl I was living with who had recently told me it was all over, I spent a significant amount of money I didn’t have to buy tickets for us to see Billy Joel and Elton John at Wrigley Field. I’m sure you can guess how successful I was. However, I did get to see a great show, one of the highlight of which was seeing Joel perform this song amid a series of monitors projecting flames behind him.

Anyway…

A couple of weeks ago I posted Simon & Garfunkel’s word salad of name dropping, A Simple Desultory Philippic (Or How I Was Robert McNamara’d Into Submission). How I could have not thought of We Didn’t Start the Fire at that point is beyond me. The S&G tune referenced four writers, while Joel cites 2 novels and 3 fiction writers in his song. Can you spot them all? (Note: Peter Pan is named, but this is in reference to the Disney movie in the 50s, not Barrie’s novel.) (And if I missed one, by all means call me on it.)
